Josephine and la Malmaison

  • Beloved, treasured, tormented: Josephine and her legend, empress by the grace of Napoleon Bonaparte.
  • The Malmaison, an impressive and eclectic manor house: an extravagant woman’s taste for elegance and refinement.
  • Lifestyle and leisure during the Consulate and the First Empire: balls, backgammon, and billiards….
The “small” mansion that Josephine Bonaparte purchased in 1797 was just a run-down estate in desperate need of care and devotion when she set her eyes on it while her husband Napoleon was off fighting in Egypt. And that is precisely what Josephine brought to the property, transforming it into a “source of riches for all of France”, just like she said she would. Today it is treasured as a national museum.
