The Eiffel Tower

  • “Iron lady” or “hollow candlestick”? The controversy around the symbol of Paris.
  • The 1889 World Fair and Gustave Eiffel’s ambitious, costly project.
  • Scientific experiments, artistic and athletic achievements: a model of inspiration.
  • A strategic radio transmitter during WWI, highly coveted during WW2.
Great visible symbol of Paris, the Eiffel tower is without a doubt the most famous architectural achievement in the world. Each year nearly 7 million visitors climb the 1665 steps (or simply ride the elevators) of this steel and iron tower erected by Gustave Eiffel and his associates for the 1889 World’s Fair.
