Carnavalet Museum

  • The city of Paris from prehistory until the beginning of the 20th century.
  • Maps, models, signs….
  • Objects from Marie Antoinette’s last intimate moments amid the chaos of the French revolution.
  • Recreated 17th- and 18th-century apartments, a 1920s ballroom, a jeweler shop from 1900, and the bedrooms of famous writers such as Voltaire and Proust.
Before commencing the enormous architectural project that would transform the French capital forever, Baron Haussmann convinced the city to purchase the Hôtel Carnavalet in the heart of the Marais for use as a museum dedicated to the history of Paris. The museum opened in 1880, and its rich and varied collection includes pre-historic and Gallo-Roman objects, works showing the many revolutions that shook the capital, and even the desk on which the Marquise de Sévigné wrote her famous letters.
